Walking Across The Curricula Team Challenge - Middle School Students
2008 Walk-a-Thon Marathon Across New England - September 27, 2008
A walk-a-thon that will take place in each of the New England states on the same date.
How many schools in the New England states can we get to hold their own Walk-a-thon on September 27, 2008? It's time to get involved and make a difference! Challenge your friends, teammates, club members or your rivals! 100% of your fundraising dollars will be directed to breast cancer research through the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation. How much can we raise? How far can we walk? How many ways can you integrate this into your curriculum. You may be surprised just how far you can take this project and how far the students will walk to make a difference!
Here's what you need to do now:
- Get administration approval to host a Walk-a-thon. Contact Jay Gionet at jay.gionet@eastlymeschools.org to register and take part in inter-school activities.
- Get approval to use a high school track or local park
- Start preparing the paperwork and forms to support students as they start obtaining pledges and donations.
- Encourage all students to participate. Possibly allow a multi-person team or challenge program between classes/grades to see which team can walk the most miles.
- Have an optional walking date and rain date plan in place.
Encourage all students to participate in the walk-a-thon. Challenge school clubs and sports teams to see which club/team can walk the most miles and/or raise the most money. By participating as a school team, it provides your students with friendly competition among themselves and other schools. It's a reason to set a goal and get fit by training for the walk. Plus, by raising funds for charity, your students will have a reason to unify for a common cause and purpose.
