Annual Meeting 2009
 |
May 19, 2009 - TBBCF annual meeting was held at the Mystic Yachting Center. Foundation President, Howard Brensilver, MD, introduced the 2009 executive committee of the board of directors including: John LaMattina, PhD, VP;
Stacey Gualtieri, Treasurer; Shawna Constantine, Secretary; and Lynda McCrea, Executive Director.
John LaMattina was introduced as master of ceremonies. He began by applauding the group for TBBCF's impressive success over the past three years: raising $1.1 million. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, LaMattina provided attendees with insight into what happens to the fundraising money. Each year, 15-20 proposals are accepted and reviewed by the Scientific Advisory Committee from top notch institutions in the northeast such as Harvard, Yale, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Because of fundraising success, three to four researchers have been selected for funding each year by TBBCF. In total, the Foundation has funded 11 researchers at $100K each.
Bill Stanley from Lawrence and Memorial Hospital provided the group with accolades for being highly professional, organized, and impressive. He credited the Hospital's decision to support the Foundation as an annual sponsor with meeting the following criteria:
1. TBBCF mission is aligned with L&M mission (health of the community).
2. TBBCF locality (money is raised here and stays here).
3. Marketing benefit. Sponsorship provides opportunity to promote hospital as leading health care provider in community.
Stanley indicated that TBBCF has an advantage over other local non-profits because we can and do demonstrate outcomes, a strategic plan and low overhead.

As TBBCF Treasurer, Stacey Gualtieri reassured the audience that TBBCF will continue to honor the pledge of directing 100% of fundraising to research. She indicated that the idea to fund an executive director may seem new to some but the long term plan from the inception of the Foundation was to hire an executive director. In order to grow the Foundation and ultimately increase fundraising it has become necessary to employ an executive director. Fundraising dollars will not support the executive director. Interest earnings, registration fees, sponsor investments and reserves, and pasta dinner ticket sales are among the revenue streams to support the executive director position.

Old Saybrook High School Cancer Walk co-chairs Allie Jensen, Kat Liggio and Allison Towne provided the group with an update on the annual all night fundraiser (held Friday May 22 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.). Each student raises $100. There are 10 teams with each team raising $1,000. Admission to the event is $5. Last year OSHS raised $30,000 and directed $4,000 to TBBCF. The co-chairs were eager to claim the spot to lead this event when they became seniors since all have been impacted by cancer. This year's walk is dedicated to the OSHS cafeteria manager who recently died of cancer.

TBBCF Foundation Leader Barbara O'Connell provided the group with information on the Breast Cancer Golf Tournaments. These events initially began with O'Connell's golf club hosting a tournament for TBBCF. She recognized that other clubs in the area were hosting breast cancer tournaments so simply approached clubs to request that they consider directing proceeds to TBBCF.
In the past three years these tournaments have raised $15,500 for TBBCF. O'Connell is seeking leads to break into six clubs: Madison, Clinton, New London, Foxwoods Lake of Isles, Hartford, and Pautipaug.
2009 confirmed schedule:
- June 1, 2009 Fox Hopyard Women's Invitational
- July 23, 2009 Old Lyme Country Club - Members only
- August 5, 2009 Stonington Country Club - Members only

Brensilver and Sandy Maniscalco ended the evening by recognizing a number of sponsors and volunteers for their continued support from 2006-2009. Plus, the newly inducted 27th Mile Club members were announced.
Maniscalco thanked the all volunteer organization for their support of her during the three years she led the group.
Geralyn McPhail provided a very special thank you on behalf of her sister, Norma Logan, to outgoing acting executive director, Maniscalco and all the volunteers.
Brensilver ended the meeting with a special presentation to Maniscalco.
